The Braven Course: Taking a Class at GooglePosted on
San José State University Fellow, Kris Torres, shares what it is like to take the Braven course on Google’s Sunnyvale campus.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST HEAR ABOUT GOOGLE?
My first contact with Google was at their New York headquarters where I visited for a business conference at the age of sixteen. Let me tell you something about Google– their offices are like a massive playground! They sit on big bouncy balls while doing work, bring their pets for fun, and get to take naps while at work!
WHAT WAS BRAVEN’S ROLE IN HELPING YOU CONNECT WITH GOOGLE?
As a Braven Fellow at SJSU, I’ve had the awesome opportunity to take the Leadership and Career Accelerator course at Google. Working for Google has long been a dream of mine and taking a leadership class at their campus with one their employees as my coach has been one of the greatest and most impactful opportunities that I have ever obtained.
ARE THE RUMORS YOU HEAR ABOUT ALL THE AMAZING GOOGLE PERKS REALLY TRUE?
Yes! Driving to their Sunnyvale campus was like moving into a new town where everyone is fit, healthy, and happy, and riding Google bikes. They have cool murals, art, and walls that you can actually write on without getting in trouble, and a microkitchen on every floor stocked with healthy and free food. Yes. Every. Single. Floor. Did I mention it was free?! Being at Google once a week made me really happy and not only because of the fun perks, but because I got to network with people in the company that I probably wouldn’t have had the chance to talk to without Braven and Google’s partnership. You get to talk and meet the employees while you’re waiting for class and it leads to new opportunities for you in the future.
WHAT ROLE DID YOUR LEADERSHIP COACH PLAY IN YOUR CAREER PATH?
My cohort leader Shanea has made an impact in my life. She connected me to an agency manager in the advertising and marketing department at Google so I could have an informational meeting. From this meeting, he helped me realize what I wanted to do with my career and gave me a few inspirational and professional pieces of advice that I know will help me after college. Google has been fun and memorable. If I could go back and do it again, I would. I never thought this would be the outcome of being a Braven Fellow. I highly suggest enrolling for Braven and I am thankful that this kind of leadership class exists because it has helped me out a lot in my future career.
