Reflections that come from the strength of our nation’s diversity

Dear Braven Community,

During this tense national moment, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be an American. I believe our country’s diversity is one of our greatest strengths. When I think about our national anthem, and lines like “the land of the free, and the home of the brave,” I think about our bold, diverse citizenry. While the author of those lines might have had a narrow view of freedom and bravery, we, as a people, have made those lines our own. We are at our best and bravest when we stand up for what’s right. When we embrace our diversity. When we welcome, support, and love one another.

Friday’s new immigration ban is an attempt to use difference as a way to divide us. Braven is a community full of immigrants; we know diversity is an asset. On Friday night, I couldn’t stop thinking about our Braven Nation, especially those among us who are feeling these actions painfully and directly. Immigrants have always been a proud part of the American story. Their journey to this country has added to its rich cultural tapestry, increased our competitive advantage, and led us to breakthroughs in every sector.

On Saturday, I pulled myself back into the light and saw people across the country doing the same. And not just that, but they were coming together in various ways — at airports, in company and university statements, and through legal channels — to fight back. Braven is proud to join this chorus of committed voices. We will keep pushing towards progress and support one another as we’re doing so. Fellows, please let us know if there are ways in which we can support you.

Braven, like America, is stronger and better because we are a diverse community full of immigrants. We will continue to focus on building an ever-expanding and powerful force of talented leaders from everywhere to help guide our nation today and for the future.

Warm regards,
